CM Magazine: Canadian Review of Materials Reviews ROOT BOUND!

Many thanks to Libby McKeever from the Whistler Public Library in Whistler, BC. for this lovely review of ROOT BOUND in CM Magazine: Canadian Review of Materials at U.Manitoba. She writes:

"Root Bound is a fantasy tale steeped in myth and influenced by the stories of Perseus and Medusa and guided by the goddess Ceres. Gough’s Basement Brownies are fun, well drawn characters with their own quirky and interesting traits. (Recommended)"

Anna Lee Everhart Reviews ROOT BOUND!

Many thanks to book reviewer Anna Lee Everhart for a lovely review of ROOT BOUND.

Ms. Everhard writes:
I didn't know what to expect with this YA Fantasy book, but I was pleasantly surprised with Ms. Gough's smart and well developed story! Her choice to combine classic children's literature and Greek and Roman mythology with new fantasy ideas was unique and likely to inspire youth to re-examine or experience the classic literature for the first time.

The Midwest Book Review on ROOT BOUND!

Midwest Book Review has reviewed Root Bound for their October edition! Here's what they say:

Witchcraft seems frightening at first, and only becomes more so as you learn more. "Root Bound" follows young Emma as she discovers someone who is most definitely a witch in her new home with her father. Drawn into a world of mysticism and fae brownies, she finds the road home for her is a long and complicated one. "Root Bound" is a fine and much recommended addition for young adult fantasy collections.

Kirkus Reviews ROOT BOUND!

The Kirkus Indie review of ROOT BOUND is in, and I'm delighted to say they liked it!  Here's an except:

"Gough cleverly mines that book’s legends, folk tales and Greek mythology, along with the works of Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll, to create settings and challenges that pay homage to classic children’s literature. At times, the narrative, geared for children ages 10 and up, can seem a bit derivative, but the charm is genuine and the laughs are frequent, as when the goddess Ceres first appears as a female Jabba the Hutt, attended by nymphs gone to seed. Gough also makes ample use of nonsensical rhythms and onomatopoeia to keep a lively pace, and her imagining of Under’s vast framework of roots and rocks is richly realized in earthly textures and sounds. The theme of finding one’s place in the world underlies the plot in this, the first in the four-part Emma and the Elementals series. Although magic abounds, it’s satisfying to see Emma find her identity with her own power.

"A lighthearted, whimsical confection that will delight both kids and their parents’ inner child. "

The Gossip Lady Features Root Bound

The Gossip Lady, a mainstay of the Portsmouth Herald and Seacoastonline.com, gives up the dirt on Root Bound in last weekend's Spotlight!

Here's the scoop:

Gossip: Former Portsmouth woman publishes 'Root Bound'

Gough briefs Portsmouth on 'Root Bound'

Tanya Karen Gough, who lived most her childhood in Portsmouth, and returns regularly to "home base" to see family, just published "Root Bound." "Root Bound" is a young adult book and the first in the series "Emma & the Elementals." This is Gough's first published novel, though not her inaugural attempt at writing or publishing.

There are those black and white notebooks filled with childhood poetry back in Portsmouth, says Gough, now of Canada, and — a tad later — contributions to: Sourcebooks Shakespeare series; the first Juno Awards Web site (Canada's Grammys), the Internet Shakespeare Editions (at u.Victoria), and other Shakespeare publications and English-as-a-Second-Language textbooks.
